Pride Committee

Pride Committee is a student-based committee dedicated to celebrating the Queer and Trans community at Durham College and UOIT. Our mandate is to create spaces that may nurture resistance and celebration for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Two-Spirit, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTTQQ2SIA+) folks and to center those who live in the margins.
Being that hetero-cis-normativity is one element of the global system of inequality, including but not limited to, inequalities based on differences based on race, ethnicity, hetero-patriarchy, ancestry, place of origin, language ability, citizenship, religion/spirituality, income, age, marital/family-status, HIV status, political affiliation and ability; we are committed to anti-oppression and decolonization principles and therefore aim to instill them in all our practices. To this end, we are anti-imperialism, anti-military/prison industrial complex and against the occupation of Palestine and Turtle Island. We are a space of resistance and actively agitate against systems of oppression.
The committee strives to accomplish its mission by following these principles:
• Facilitating meaningful participation for LGBTTQQ2SIA+ students and their allies on all DC/UOIT campuses;
• Affirming and promoting the importance of engaging in the broader intersectional community through further LGBTTQQ2SIA+ equity within a broader social context;
• Working closely with the LGBTQ Centre, UOIT’s Student Life and Durham College’s Student Diversity, Inclusion and Transitions on various educational and social justice campaigns for equity and inclusiveness; and
• Promoting and partaking in peer support, services and referrals offered through the DC/UOIT LGBTQ Centre, as required.

Students for Sensible Drug Policy

SSDP is a national grass-roots network that focuses on mobilizing towards drug policy that provides appropriate health care responses to reduce and prevent harm from drug use, discusses drug use as a public health concern as opposed to a criminal justice issue, and involves students in developing and supporting programs that promote these policies. Our purpose is to inform students of services available in their communities and to provide a compassionate and non-judgemental space in which they may discuss substance use related issues in their lives. In addition to this, SSDP aims to foster debate within the community in order to understand the role that the current drug policies play in the general social order, and discuss viable alternatives to existing drug policies.
