The Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) is on-call 24/7 to respond to medical emergencies and provide advanced first aid on campus. In the event of an emergency, you can reach CERT by contacting campus security at 905 721 2000 ext. 2400 or dialing 2400 from any campus phone.

For the 2016-2017 year, the governance of the CERT team has been transferred to Durham College and is now managed by the Office of Campus Safety.

CERT offers event coverage on campus. To book CERT for your event, email certscheduling@dc-uoit.ca.

If you’d like to volunteer, contact Shannan Saunders, Manager of Emergency Management.

Do I have to be in a health-related program to volunteer with CERT?

No. Students from all programs are encouraged to apply.

What are the requirements to join CERT?

In order to participate in our training for Advanced Medical First Responders (AMFR), you must have acquired your Standard First Aid within the last three years and your CPR-C within the last year. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

How many hours do I have to commit to volunteering?

CERT requires a minimum of 12 volunteer hours biweekly. Volunteers must attend a four-hour training session each month to ensure that your first aid skills are up-to-date.

Do I have to live in residence to volunteer with CERT?

No. But we do provide beds for responders working overnight.

Do I have to pay for training?

No. However, you must remain a volunteer for at least one year to receive free training. You’ll be asked to provide a cheque post-dated one year from your hiring. If you complete one year of service, the cheque will be returned to you. If you leave the team before completing one year of service, your cheque will be cashed. Exceptions may be made for volunteers required to leave for a medical reason, as long as a doctor’s note is provided.

Do I have to attend both weekends of the AMFR course?

Yes, both weekends are mandatory.

Do I have to buy my uniform?

No. Your uniform shirt is free of charge but must be returned to CERT when you leave the team.
