The final countdown is on! We’re less than a week away from the start of a new school year and the SA is looking forward to welcoming all new and returning students back to campus. We’re also looking forward to a fresh start.
As you’re probably well aware, the last several months has been a challenging period for the SA and there’s still a lot of work to do. One of our top priorities is being open and transparent with you, our members. For starters, we’ve got a few updates to share.
We’re excited to announce that some CampusFest programming is back on! You might be wondering why these events were cancelled in the first place and where your SA fees are right now. Currently, both Durham College and UOIT are holding onto those fees and distributing them to us as needed. When students spoke out against the cancellation of CampusFest events, the institutions decided to release enough fees to the SA so that we can bring you the events you look forward to every year! Head over to our CampusFest page for all the details. While the line-up does not include a concert, we are working with the schools to hopefully put together a large-scale event later this fall.
SA President Cerise Wilson has resigned, effective August 31. Within the last several weeks, we have also received resignations from Durham College Board Directors Chris Carey, Bushra Khan and Andrew Budden. All resignations are pending approval by the SA Board of Directors. All vacant positions will be open to eligible nominees during the SA By-Election in mid-October.
In July, the SA Board of Directors called for an investigation into potential concerns regarding the conduct of Cerise Wilson and Mariam Abonokerah, VP University. The investigation is still ongoing as the SA has an obligation to uphold due diligence.
The SA is continuing with plans to undertake an organizational review. We’re currently looking at ways to engage students in this process and ensure your feedback for building a better SA is taken into consideration.
If you’ve been over to the Student Centre recently, you may have noticed some changes going on in the 2nd floor lounge. That’s because we’re renovating to make room for Outreach Services. The North Campus office is relocating from the Simcoe Building to what will be new office space later this year.
For any gamers wondering where to set up shop without the lounge, we’ve got you covered! We’re excited to announce a new gaming lounge located just inside E.P.’s with comfy couches and TV’s you can hook your consoles up to.
The gaming lounge is part of some overall changes happening at E.P.’s as we move away from being a pub and restaurant toward a full-service café and lounge. Instead of table service, you’ll order food from E.P.’s Express, pick it up fast, and have a seat in the Express dining area, in the lounge, or even on the patio. As we roll out our new plans for E.P.’s, and in an effort to ensure we’re spending student money wisely, alcohol will not be available. We’ll re-examine alcohol service later this year.
Again, we know there’s a lot of work ahead to get the SA on the right track and deliver the representation and services you deserve. Throughout it all, we welcome your feedback. Reach out to us via Facebook or Twitter, drop us a line through the contact form on the homepage, or get in touch with an Executive or Board Director.
Enjoy your final days of summer and we’ll see you next week!
