To our Members:
This past February, The Student Association at Durham College and UOIT (SA) launched our General Elections for the 2016-2017 term. As anyone who participated in or followed the election can attest, it was a problematic process fraught with complaints, appeals and delays unlike any election this SA has ever experienced. The result of four challenging months left many of you hurt, frustrated and disappointed in an organization whose sole responsibility is to represent and protect you.
We, the SA, offer our sincerest apologies to anyone negatively affected by this election. The 2016-2017 Executive team and Board of Directors are passionate about serving our Members with respect, honesty, equity and transparency. Our goal is to connect with all students while supporting our valuable staff and working alongside Durham College and UOIT administration.
We are currently in the process of reviewing our bylaws, policies, and procedures to ensure that the mistakes we made do not happen again. As there are certain issues that arise during an election outside our control, we call on all those involved to help us protect the democratic freedoms of our student Members.
We also ask our student Members to help us foster an environment of respect and kindness, on campus and online. During the election, much activity occurred on social media that was hurtful, hateful and demoralizing. We have regulations in place that dictate acceptable and unacceptable online behaviour for SA Executives, Board Directors, staff and volunteers, and we do our best to enforce these rules. Students who witness concerning online behaviour of anyone within the SA are advised to contact us at email@example.com.
The SA does not allow bullying in any form on our online channels. Derogatory and/or discriminatory comments will be removed and individuals who exhibit consistent behaviour of this nature will be banned from our social media accounts. However, we cannot control the online activity of students at large. As students, you have a responsibility to ensure our campus community is free of hate and bullying. Our expectation is that students will review and abide by their institution’s Student Conduct Policy.
Unlike other student unions, the SA is in a unique position serving the diverse interests of both Durham College and UOIT students. We think it’s important that all of our Members are aware that the SA offers an equal opportunity to DC and UOIT students to represent their institution within the SA. There are six Board of Director positions and three Executive positions for each school, plus three Executive positions open to candidates from either school. We encourage all full-time DC and UOIT students to get involved in the SA by coming to the AGM, running in elections, and voting for the candidates.
At any time, we welcome your questions, comments and feedback. To reach us, visit www.sadcuoit.ca and scroll to the bottom of the homepage to find our contact form.
We look forward to serving you this coming academic year and beyond.
